Users’ voice messages are sent to Google via Telegram Premium

Telegram Premium

For Telegram Premium users, Google converts their voice messages to text.

The creator of this website Habr website with the pseudonym snaker4 has drawn interest to the issue, Gazeta.ru says.

Snaker4 observed that the User Agreement Clause 7.4 states that you can transmit audio messages only via “Google LLC, a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc.”. The information in the following paragraph indicates that Telegram uses a “third-party” technology for decryption of audio messages.

“This technology is in the process of developing and it is not guaranteed that every voice signal that you try to convert into text will be properly transcribing or decrypted in any way. The reliability and accuracy of this technology depend on a third-party (Google LLC, which is a affiliate to Alphabet Inc.) and we cannot assure that it will always remain as it is.

However, not all users have accepted this stance in complete confidence. For instance, the creator of the Backdoor Telegram channel in a blog post specifically devoted to the feature in this messaging app wrote that there could be a chance of hearing audio messages sent by Google.

But he also mentions that decryption is not accessible in chats with a secret channel. Perhaps for the exact same reason, to protect against the possibility of divulging of their contents to an outside person.
